CHAPTER 18
Wow,â said Phia with young innocence. âWhat a coincidence. Ruthieâs grandson has the same name as you.â Phia noticed the steam coming from the kettle on the woodstove. âHow about a cup of real tea.â She hopped off the bed and went to the stove.
Jackson smiled at Ruth. âSo, Frankie married your daughter. How is he doing?â Where does he live now?â Jackson kept rattling off questions without waiting for an answer.
Before Ruth could slow down Jacksonâs quarries, a low growl got their attention. It was Reese; she remained outside and on guard by the door.
Phia quickly ran to the door and opened it. Ruth followed, and Jackson hobbled as fast as he could towards.
âLook,â said Phia. She was pointing across the lake. âSomeoneâs coming.â
A small team of dogs was barking and pulling a loaded sled their way. Running, and occasionally hopping on the runners, was a man in a beaver parka. The lead dog was gray like a wolf and slightly larger than the rest of the dogs. Phia watched this dog, as he led his team up the lake. When the dogs behind him swung out of line, he would pull them back on track. She stood there fascinated at the team of huskies, as they charged her way. It was such a glorious sight.
But her wolf friend didnât think so. Reese growled with open jaws, and her hair stood tall and bristled all across her back. She was ready to fight.
Phia got down on her knees and tightly held on to the snarling wolf. âNo Reese, please no.â
Reese wanted to ignore her friend, but she finally calmed down.
Phia pointed toward the wooded hillside behind them. âYou must go. I will be fine. These are my people. Please, I donât want anything to happen to you.â Phia gently turned the wolf around. âGo.â
Reese didnât understand why she had to leave. She looked up at Phia and waged her tail. Phia kissed her on the nose and pointed towards the hill behind them. âPlease go.â
The sad wolf understood and made her way up the hillside. She found a pinnacle of rock that she could crawl out on and watch the valley below. She lay down, and patiently watched and waited for her friend. She would be there, if Phia needed her.
Jackson turned to Ruth. âIs that my son?â
Ruth shook her head. âFrankie travels by snow machine. The handsome young man coming this way is my grandson, Francis.â
Phia stood between Jackson and Ruth. She felt the anticipation radiating out from the adults beside her. It was contagious. She was on her toes, as she watched the team of dogs effortlessly charged up the lake. They were poetry in motion.
She had heard of Alaskan sled dogs and had seen their pictures. But to actually watch them in action was breathtaking. As the team drifted left, she heard a gentle, but firm voice sing out, âGee.â And the lead dog swung right, and the sled straightened out, as it headed up the lake.
